Applying for British Citizenship
With settled status, there is no limit to your stay in the UK. However, you will eventually have the choice to apply to become a British citizen through a process known as naturalisation. As a British national, in addition to your right to freely enter and work in the UK without restriction, you will also be eligible to be included on the UK’s electoral role. Once you become a British citizen, you will also be eligible to apply for a British passport.
You may be eligible to apply for British citizenship based on:
- Completing five years continuous residence in the UK; or
- Having been resident in the UK for at least 3 years as the spouse/civil partner of a British citizen.
You will also have had to pass the ‘Life in the UK’ test and must be able to demonstrate that you are of good character.
